However, the exact time changes daily according to sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Time guide <\/strong><strong>tour <\/strong><strong>things to note:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bats begin flying out about 15 to 30 minutes before the sun completely sets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the dry season between April and October, sunset in the Flores area occurs around 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM WITA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the rainy season between November and March, sunset can be earlier, around 17.45 WITA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ideally, arrive at the location no later than 30 minutes before the estimated sunset so as not to miss the start of the migration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dry season is the best time not only because the weather is clearer, but also because the twilight sky during this time is richer in color. It usually begins with one or two small groups moving from the tops of the mangrove trees. As sunset approaches, more and more people join in. At the peak, the sky is literally filled with thousands of bats flying towards the Flores mainland to forage for food throughout the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A teacher from Malang named Santi Astuti, who took her family to Labuan Bajo in August 2024, described the moment this way: &quot;At first, it was normal, only a few people flew in. But then it suddenly became really crowded. My child, who wasn&#039;t enthusiastic at first, immediately stood up and refused to sit down until the end.&quot;\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is it safe to watch bats from a boat?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This question is natural to arise, especially for those who bring children or have never been near a large bat colony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is: it&#039;s safe, as long as proper procedures are followed. Visitors don&#039;t disembark onto Kalong Island. The entire experience takes place on a boat anchored in the waters surrounding the island, a good distance from the trees where the bats roost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some things to note for comfort:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is no need for masks or special protection because the bats fly in the opposite direction from the ship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Luggage should be covered or put in a bag because the sea wind in the afternoon can be strong.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For those who have problems with crowds of animals or are easily panicked, sitting inside the cabin may be more comfortable while still being able to watch from the window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A camera with low-light capabilities is very helpful because the light at dusk changes quickly and conditions can become dim in a matter of minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a health perspective, fruit bats are known to be reservoirs of various viruses. However, as long as there is no direct contact, the risk of transmission is virtually nonexistent. The National Park management also prohibits visitors from entering the island&#039;s mainland for this reason, as well as to preserve the bats&#039; habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is Kalong Island Suitable for Children and Families?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the destinations in Labuan Bajo that is actually very suitable for family tourism, including with elementary school-aged children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#039;s no climbing, no ocean currents to navigate, and no strenuous physical activity. The entire experience takes place on a relatively stable boat in calm waters.
