<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you know about Wae Rebo? Of course, it's a tourist village in eastern Indonesia, specifically in East Nusa Tenggara. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters above sea level, this traditional village is surrounded by mountains and hills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Undoubtedly, this destination, nicknamed the Land Above the Clouds, boasts breathtakingly beautiful natural scenery and crisp, fresh mountain air. UNESCO inaugurated Wae Rebo as a World Heritage Site in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This village is located about 6 kilometers from Dintor Village to Denge Village by motorbike. The journey from Denge Village to Wae Robo Village takes about 3 hours of hiking. You'll be taken through remote areas surrounded by dense, untouched forest, crossing rivers, and crossing cliff edges. Sounds exciting, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local people believe that their ancestor, Empo Maro, came from Minangkabau. He sailed with his family and eventually landed in Labuan Bajo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empo Maro himself is said to have moved around frequently before finally settling in Wae Robo Village. Interestingly, this decision was made after he had a dream about settling in the village now known as Wae Rebo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wae Robo Village can be described as a very beautiful village. This still very traditional village also has many unique and interesting things you should know, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Becoming One of the Highest Villages in Indonesia<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters above sea level, Wae Rebo is considered one of the highest villages in the archipelago. It's no surprise that this village is often shrouded in mist every day. Interestingly, this mist slowly descends and envelops the entire village area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It's no wonder the air in this village is so cool and chilly. Not only that, the natural scenery is also truly breathtaking. As far as the eye can see, you'll see nothing but majestic mountains and hills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • There are only seven houses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Another interesting aspect is the presence of only seven houses in Wae Robo village, known as Mbaru Niang. These rare traditional houses have five stories and a unique shape, resembling a conical barn with a roof made of palm leaves and covered with palm fiber. Even more uniquely, each house is home to between six and eight families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Every tourist visiting Wae Rebo will be welcomed into a traditional house specifically reserved for guests. You'll be served the renowned Flores coffee. There are no lodgings available in the village, so you can spend the night in the Mbaru Niang's house. Don't worry, pillows and blankets are provided!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Have a Special Celebration Ceremony<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Like other communities that still uphold their traditions, the residents of Wae Robo Village also maintain a special celebratory ceremony. This is the Penti Traditional Ceremony, held in November. This celebration is an expression of gratitude from the locals for a bountiful harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Furthermore, the community hopes for protection and harmony during the celebrations. If you visit Wae Rebo during the celebrations, you'll find locals dressed in traditional attire and all the accessories. Furthermore, you can witness the traditional ceremony itself, complete with various exciting attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • Seven Traditional Houses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          The Mbaru Niang traditional houses have always been preserved and well-maintained by the villagers. In fact, the houses predate the 18th century and have been inhabited by local residents for generations. Interestingly, the number of Mbaru Niang houses has never increased or decreased. From their inception until today, the number of traditional houses remains the same, remaining seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          In fact, the number seven associated with the number of Mbaru Niang houses was not chosen arbitrarily. It has a deeply sacred meaning, reflecting respect for the seven mountains in the area. Locals believe these seven mountains act as protectors of the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • The shape of the Mbaru Niang house<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            The Wae Rebo traditional house is cone-shaped and stands approximately 15 meters tall. The roof is made of palm leaves covered with palm fiber. The underside of the roof extends almost to the ground. The conical shape of this traditional house is interpreted as a symbol of unity and protection for the village community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Meanwhile, each house consists of five floors with many rooms serving different functions. For example, the first floor of a traditional house is the lutur room, which serves as both a living area and a gathering place for family members. Then, heading up to the second floor, you'll find the lobo, or attic, used for storing various daily necessities and food supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Moving on to the third floor, there's a room specifically used for storing food crop seeds. This room is called the lentar. Meanwhile, the fourth floor is used for the lempa rae. This room functions as a food storage area in case the village experiences a drought. Finally, on the fifth floor, there's the hekang kode room, used to place offerings for ancestors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • Founded on Flat Land<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              The Mbaru Niang traditional house is entirely built on flat ground. The seven houses are built around a Compang, or altar, which serves as the center of the seven traditional buildings. The altar, or Compang, serves as a place for the community to worship God and the spirits of their ancestors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • Unique House Building Construction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                Still related to the Wae Rebo traditional house, which is made from a combination of bamboo and worok wood. Interestingly, the house was built without nails. The structure is held together using strong rattan rope. Furthermore, the Mbaru Niang also adapted the stilt house design with a one-meter-high platform. This height stems from ancestral rules that dictate that the floor of the house must not touch the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
